Theo C. Presents….My Top 10 Best Heel Turns In Pro Wrestling
The art of the Heel Turn In Professional Wrestling. It’s where a Beloved Good Guy Or Good Girl that is loved by the fans all of a sudden turn their backs to them and join the Dark Side. Either if it’s to bring a new layer to the character or when the fans are sick of seeing the character being all Goody Two Shoes and just want that character to change. Well, this list is to describe 10 Awesome Heel Turns that would benefit their careers and laid a huge impact in Professional Wrestling.
It was around the time where the crowds were split on the Hero Bret “The Hitman” Hart and the Anti-Hero “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. Then at WrestleMania 13, in the I Quit Match, the fans made the decision to side with Austin than Bret. Afterwards, Bret Hart would go to the fans and proclaim that he still loves his fans from all over the world but despises his American fans for siding with Stone Cold and because of their decline of their morals and decency. This leads to a split between fans as when WWE goes International and to Canada, Bret Hart is the hero, but in the United States, he is the most hated man in the company. This would provide into one hell of a feud in 1997 between Hart and Austin then it turned to Hart vs. HBK…Which leads to something that would be mentioned in this countdown.
After defeating John Cena clean as a sheet at SummerSlam, Daniel Bryan accomplished his dream and became the New WWE Champion. Triple H handing him the title and raising his hand as Confetti rain down and Fireworks explode on what was going to be the biggest moment in Daniel Bryan’s career. Then Randy Orton (Babyface at the time) arrives with the Money In The Bank Briefcase, ready to cash it in and Bryan was ready for it. But then Triple H, who was a Babyface at that point, Pedigreed Bryan and let Orton cash it in, pin Bryan and become the champion…The Authority was born on that night and the IWC’s bliss, turned into a nightmare. This feud fued a new Heel Stable in The Authority and makes Daniel Bryan into the everyday hero that the fans still root for to this day.
For nearly 6 years, The Undertaker and Paul Bearer were as one. When you see Paul Bearer, The Undertaker is not that far behind. Then came the 1996 SummerSlam event and the Boiler Room Brawl as The Undertaker clashed with the deranged Mankind which the object to win is to grab the urn that Paul Bearer was holding. Both Taker and Mankin brawled throughout the Boiler Room then spilled ther epic battle to the ring. Undertaker being to first to go to Bearer asked for the urn but Bearer refuses then Paul smashes Taker’s head with the urn and handing the urn to Mankind, siding with the Deranged one over The Deadman.
Around the time, Stephanie McMahon was hoping to marry Test. However, Triple H kidnapped her at the Bachelorette Party and took her to a Drive-Thru Chapel in Vegas where The Game married her. This leads to a match between a vengeful Vince McMahon against Triple H. After Triple H used his trusty Sledgehammer to get the win, Stephanie was left to tears as she checked on the fallen body of her father then it looks like Triple H was going to use the Sledgehammer on his wife. However, in a moment that shocked the world, Stephanie’s tears and shock turns to smiles and laughter and she embraces her husband and well…The rest was history.
Still Simmering after the incident at Survivor Series a few months ago, Owen Hart wanted to leave his brother’s shadow, claiming that he was held back due to Jealousy. However, cooler heads had prevailed and the Hart Brothers team up to take on the WWE Tag Team Champions The Quebecers at the 1994 Royal Rumble. The Harts lost the match due to Ref Stoppage courtesy of Bret’s Injured Leg. This leads to Owen Hart’s heel turn and lead to their great feud which featured a WrestleMania classic between the Brothers at WrestleMania X.
This is from the days of the NWA, The National Wrestling Alliance. Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat concluded their epic and iconic trilogy of matches for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in another all-time classic where Flair regained the title from The Dragon. After the match, Terry Funk, who served as a Ringside Judge for the match, arrived during Flair’s In-Ring Post Match Interview and asked for a title shot. When Flair refused due to Funk not being in the Top 10 Contenders for the title, Funk “Apologizes” to Flair for the offer the wallops the hell out of Flair then Piledrives The Nature Boy through the Judge’s table at ringside, sparking an intense war between the two throughout the remainder of 1989.
It was always hinted and teased that Vince McMahon is turning heel since the weeks after the Montreal Screwjob and fueled even further when he claims that he didn’t want the popular “Stone Cold” Steve Austin as the WWE Champion at Wrestlemania 14. But on the April 13, 1998 edition of Monday Night RAW, Vince McMahon became Mr. McMahon when he accepted Austin’s challenge to face him for the WWE Title. The moment when that happened helped turn the tide in the Monday Night War between WWE’s Monday Night RAW and WCW’s Monday Nitro and the start of one of the most iconic feuds in Pro Wrestling.
On an edition of Piper’s Pit, Hulk Hogan was being honored for his three year championship reign and was presented a huge trophy by WWE President Jack Tunney. Then Andre The Giant made a surprise appearance to congratulate Hogan but then acknowledged about his long standing Undefeated Streak. Then on another edition of Piper’s Pit, Andre was being honored by that same streak but notices that his trophy was smaller than Hogan’s, causing Andre to walk out. It was a debate over the whole scenario till Jesse “The Body” Ventura told the host “Rowdy” Roddy Piper that he will present Andre in Piper presents Hogan. They agreed and on another Piper’s Pit in the shock of all shocks, Andre arrived with his new manager, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan to the shock of the Wrestling World. Andre calmly puts down Hogan and ask for one thing…A World Title Match at WrestleMania III. The Hulkster tried to reason with the Giant, only for Andre to rip Hogan’s shirt and the crucifix jewel off in response of this. To this day and yes, despite recent actions by Hulk Hogan, it’s still one of the most iconic moments in Pro Wrestling history leading to their epic encounter at WrestleMania 3.
The Rockers (Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannetty) were one of the most popular tag teams around that time in the WWE but had been experiencing some problems. So they decided to try and hash it all out on an edition of Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake’s Barber Shop. It seems that both Shawn & Marty let bygones be bygones and shook hands to the cheers from the crowd and the relief of Rockers Fans worldwide….Then there was the Kick Heard Round The World. Then Shawn picked Marty up and threw him through the Barber Shop Window. Then takes the WWE Magazine and shows the page of the Rockers and say, “Is there a Problem with The Rockers?!” then rips off the Marty half and shows the Shawn half and said, “I don’t think so!” Now the buildup was going to lead to Shawn & Marty going at it at WrestleMania 8. But didn’t happen due to Janetty being temporarily released due to a Police Altercation. But that moment is still a defying moment for Shawn Michaels and his path to becoming one of the greatest of all time and as for the other….Well, he got famous for this moment for all the wrong reasons.
Former WWE Superstars Kevin Nash and Scott Hall made their jump to WCW and promises a hostile takeover with the addition of a third man. To stop that from happening, WCW bring in their heavy hitters to combat The Outsiders and the mysterious third man, sending in Sting, “Macho Man” Randy Savage and “The Total Package” Lex Luger at Bash At The Beach. In the final moments in the match, Hulk Hogan makes an apperance, looking like he was going to help WCW in combating against The Outsiders, but one Leg Drop to the Macho Man changed all that. Then Hogan does a promo after the match, denouncing WCW and the fans turn on him big time as he annouces the formation of the nWo.
